• Centerville native and jockey Mack
Garner rode Cavalcade to win the Kentucky Derby in 1934.
• Brigham Young was named head of the Mormon Church in 1847 while
traveling through Appanoose County at the “Ring of Rocks”.
• The machine gunner from the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre
married Centerville native Bonny Porter on the historic town square.
• Jessie and Frank James may have robbed the bank in Corydon, Iowa,
but they needed to hitch a ride there first. The brothers bought a pair
of horses outside of The Continental Hotel & Restaurant just prior
to riding to Corydon and making their mark in the history books.
• Howard Hughes’s round-the-world flight was managed by Albert
I. Lodwick, who was born and raised just outside of Centerville in the
town of Mystic.
